Catheter-related infections in a northwestern São Paulo reference unit for burned patients care BJID
Campos Júnior,Cláudio Penido; Sanches,Patrícia; Tedokon,Elizabete Aparecida; Souza,Ana Carolina Remondi; Machado,Ricardo Luiz Dantas; Rossit,Andréa Regina Baptista.
Despite improvements in care and rehabilitation of burned patients, infections still remain the main complication and death cause. Catheter-related infections are among the four most common infections and are associated with skin damage and insertion site colonization. There are few studies evaluating this kind of infection worldwide in this special group of patients. Padre Albino Hospital Burn Care Unit (PAHBCU) is the only reference center in the Northwestern São Paulo for treatment of burned patients. This paper presents the results of a retrospective study aiming at describing the epidemiological and clinical features of catheter-related infections at PAHBCU.

Central venous access through the external jugular vein in children submitted to bone marrow transplantation BABT
Godoy,José Luiz de; Otta,Edson Keity; Miyazaki,Ricardo Atsumori; Bitencourt,Marco Antonio; Pasquini,Ricardo.
Establishment of long-term central venous access is a sine qua non step for bone marrow transplantation in children. Most frequently, long-term central venous access has been obtained via blind percutaneous cannulation of subclavian and internal jugular veins or via internal jugular vein cutdown. In order to avoid some potential minor and major complications associated with the subclavian or internal jugular approaches, the authors describe an easy, simple and safe method for central venous access through an external jugular vein cutdown that should be of interest to readers involved in the field of bone marrow transplantation. It should be also considered for children as well as adults needing central venous access via an external catheter - or totally...

Fluid therapy in large animais - Part II: amount and administration routes MV&Z
Dearo, Antônio Cézar de Oliveira; Reichmann, Peter.
The amount, administration routes and fluid flow rates are as important as the indications of fluid therapy and which fluid to use. Considering that fluid therapy is often maintained for long periods in many clinical situations, the use of intravenous catheters and large animal IV administration sets reduce the need for continuous supervision.
